How is it that a little girl who can take twenty minutes to walk from our front door to the car when it's time to go to school can race to the top of a mountain with her cousin in just a few minutes? We spent a Saturday in the utterly empty and beautiful town of Dürnstein and climbed to the medieval ruins of Dürnstein castle overlooking a huge curve in the Danube in the late afternoon.

It may not be quite as pretty, but there's something great about visiting European tourist destinations in the winter. Even in Vienna, it sometimes felt like we were the only tourists in town, and we don't see another soul in the castle.
