As we were driving across the back roads of Vermont, we came across this lovely little 180-year-old farm [Taylor Farm, Londonderry, VT]. The farmer said we could go wherever we wanted on the farm and handed us a bunch of slop to feed to the pigs. After wandering around for half an hour or so, when we were loading a few vats of maple syrup into our car, two goats climbed into the front seat (you can see one of them by the tractor). The incident almost provided enough laughs to get us to New York without whining.

(Maybury State Park has $5 pony rides; I couldn't take a picture of Gram because I needed to walk beside the horse while he was up there)

Our horse-obsessed little girl would later say this was her favorite part. She described the various brushes to my wife in great detail.

The instructor was impressed that she displayed no fear at all. . .

This was Bud, her horse. She spent all day before the lesson shaking with nervous energy and anticipation. We're going back once a week for the rest of the summer, I don't care if it sends me to the poorhouse.

The kids are now really in a cowboy/horses phase, so we finally dug out the Halloween costume box and found the Pegasus head. She wanted to be a palomino so she pulled out a weird orange velvet dress I found at the thrift store years ago.

The boy seems really content to watch her run while snacking in his pink cowboy hat and leather chaps. Think what you will, but it takes one tough hombre to pull off a pink cowboy hat.
